WordPress – Reality Check

The best part of WordPress is that it is open source, and there are tons of companies who’s bread and butter comes from the themes and plugins they develop for this CMS (Content Management System). These companies make money from the support they provide for these themes and plugins, because WordPress as part of software development lifecycle keeps on changing to handle changing requirements, bugs in the previous release or to address issues related to safety and securities.

These changes keep WordPress safe and secured, but force developers to adjust tune up update their themes and plugins. If themes and plugins are not updated as frequently as WordPress it might break your website or leave your website vulnerable to security and safety related threats.

Big Change spin speculations

Loyal WordPress users and developers

There are loyal developers who must have been working around to make sure their themes and plugins work well with WordPress 5.0, but you can’t say the same thing about all the themes and plugins. So there are good amount of chances that your theme or plugins might not behave the way they are suppose to.

That is why it is always suggested to use themes and plugins that are consistently updated and vendor provides a timely support. You can’t say the say the same thing for all the free themes and plugins but most of the premium themes and plugins come with dedicated support system.

Many vendors have been working on “Gutenberg” since the day one, and are already working of updating their themes and plugins. Few others have come out with new themes that are Gutenberg- compatible.

Test before the release

If you own a wordpress website, you will find a link on a dashboard for “Gutenberg” available as a plugin for testing. You should install it to check how well it works with your current theme and plugins installed.

WordPress is based on community led development. Hence when you test this plugin and find some bug or issue you can drop a comment in the forum and can help WordPress developers to fix that bug before the final product gets released. Lots of people are testing and have participated in helping the developers, its because of that the release date has been postponed several  to make sure when WordPress 5.0 is released it is free from errors and bugs.

Developers are using this plugin and documentation provided by WordPress team to update their themes and plugins while many developers are coming with new “Gutenberg” compatible themes to gain ground in the marketplace with the new release of WordPress.

Not happy about WordPress aka “Gutenberg”

There is another set of people who are not in favor of new release. They believe WordPress team is shifting away from the core principles it had started with. Few of the principles listed as part of their philosophy are:

  • Should Work out of the box
  • Designed for Majority
  • User First Approach
  • Clean, Lean and Mean
  • Should strive for simplicity

Gutenberg is built on React, a very popular JavaScript framework. Same framework is used and maintained by companies like Facebook and Instagram. Besides that Gutenberg takes advantage of a lot of modern technologies such as the REST API, ESnext + JSX, WebPack, etc., it is also going to impact developers who will have to learn and adopt these new technologies. This might just slow down the development process and might be difficult update themes and plugins to align with the new release of WordPress.

Those who are not happy with this big change have lot many other options available. There is a good news for those who want to stick around with WordPress only – Scott Bowler – Founder of Holly Social founded another way to handle the situation. He founded ClassicPress a solution for WordPress lovers. ClassiPress is a forked WordPress 4.9.8, which will now be maintained without “Gutenberg” by the WordPress Community who differs in opinion from WordPress team.

Few other alternatives to WordPress are listed below:

Joomla too just like WordPress is community based CMS and has several thousands of free plugins available. It is also a better multilingual platform. Downside is that Joomla is basically not as developer friendly, nor is it that user-friendly compared to WordPress.

Drupal is actually ideal for advanced websites. It is a RAD tool and will allows rapid prototyping. This feature helps to create a complex site in no time thus saving lots of time and efforts. Downside is that it is comparatively complex and not ideal for beginners. If you are looking for solution to blogging, it is certainly not as good as WordPress.

This is yet another tool which is quite user-friendly and incredibly easy to use. Ideal for beginners. Downside is that some of the templates it provides cannot be customized to user’s need.

This tools is best suited for beginners. Again best for simple websites. Back-end along with overall looks are also functional and user-friendly. You might have to struggle to add Custom Content types or while you try to migrate to some other platforms.

What’s best about Squarespace is that there is no need to sign up for hosting or purchase a domain. Provides options that you will be able to create your own design, simply by drag and drop builder based on content blocks. By far there are less chances that WordPress will leave you unattended. It is also looking for loyal users who don’t walk away when they can participate by giving timely feedback and developers who can be a huge difference by being there when WordPress needs them. WordPress team feels they need to compete with other similar products and for that these changes are must. Make  a fair choice, that is in your favor in long run.
